The battle of kings. NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 690 video card testing
A month ago, in Gamemenia No. 5/22, we talked about the new line of video cards NVIDIA. At that time, there was only one fee in the assortment of the company – GTX 680, which still costs from 17,500 rubles. Preparing this number, we tuned in the appearance of the younger brothers of the flagship. However, NVIDIA unexpectedly released the GTX 690, equipped with two GK104 (GTX 680) chips on the fresh Kepler architecture.
Surprise
The fact that Nvidia will have no problems with creating a two -processor model, we did not doubt. Crystal GK104 consumes funny for the top 190 watts. Compared to the SLI binding, GTX 690 lost quite a bit: the base frequency has fallen from 1006 to 915 MHz. In this case, the GPU Boost can bring processors to 1019 MHz. The rest of the characteristics correspond to the double GTX 680. The number of streams of nuclei is 3072 pieces, textures – 256 TMU, rasterization blocks – 64 ROP. In memory, now not 2, but 4 GB GDDR5 operating at 6008 MHz.
The switching of the board is standard for dual -core models. In fact, on one piece of textolite there is a pair of independent cards connected by the SLI bridge (PLX). The only thing in common has the installed GPU is a ten -phase power system. GTX 690 requires 300 watts provided by two PCIe 8-Pin forks.
Luxury
Usually we do not discuss the appearance of video cards, but for the GTX 690 we will have to make an exception. This is a real work of art. The insides are protected by a powerful aluminum body with many bevels. The central part is painted black, the side ones are covered with dull chrome and equipped. Closer to the input/output panel stamped "GTX 690". On the left edge there is a glowing green inscription "GeForce GTX".
The cooling system compared to GTX 680 intensified. No simple coolers on heat pipes – in return are the usual evaporative chambers supplemented by nickelled aluminum radiators. The active element is one-a 90-mm turntable in the center with a impeller of an unusual shape, lowering the noise level. The set of video outputs is strange. There are three DVI and only one mini displayport – there was no place for HDMI.
Arrived
To test the novelty, we collected a test stand on the motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R , Stuck a processor into it Intel Core i7-920 and covered him with cooler Cooler Master V6. RAM we had three planks Kingston Hyperx DDR3-1666 MHz 2 GB each. Operating system Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the package of programs was installed on a solid -state drive Kingston SSDNOW volume of 64 GB.
They took the whole company flagships as competitors: GTX 680 , 580 , 590 And Radeon HD 7970 C HD 6970. We compared video cards in synthetic 3dmark11 And Unigine Heaven Benchmark 2.5 , And also in three games: Aliens vs. Predator , Dirt 2 , Total War: Shogun 2. They were not shy with the settings: all to the maximum, permission from 1680×1050, anti -aliasing – from 4x msaa.
The fact that the GTX 690 would be noticeably faster than the opponents, we understood, but the fact that in the first benchmark is Unitine Heaven Benchmark 2.5, he will bring 69%to his classmate brother – to put it mildly, it was unexpected. While the GTX 680 showed 43.7 FPS, the GTX 690 issued stunning 74.2 FPS. The next shock was the results of Aliens vs. Predator – 105.5 versus 57.7 frames per second. Significantly added Nvidia in Total War: Shogun 2. In the most severe mode, the speed increased from 23.2 to 53.9 fps!
Unfortunately, Dirt 2 did not see two GPUs and worked with the card as with the usual GTX 680, but with reduced frequencies. The same situation has developed with GTX 590. No matter how sad, but this is a feature of the game – in combination with certain equipment, it refuses to load the second GPU normally.
If with the GeForce GTX 680 we still doubted whether to call NVIDIA the new video cards king, then with the release of GTX 690 we can firmly say: the company releases the fastest boards in the world. They, of course, cost from 35,999 rubles apiece, but if you do not want to constrain yourself in the settings and permits, then this is the only choice.
Good company
Kepler architecture is very similar to its predecessor Fermi. The crystal is divided into four healthy clusters (Graphics Processing Cluster), each of which carries one rasterizer and two SMX. The latter contain 192 stream processors, 16 textures and 32 sets of special operations. As a result, the GK104 is charged 1536 CUDA Yadra, 128 TMU, 8 Polymorph Engine, responsible for Tesselia, and 32 ROP. Four chips with a total capacity of 64 bits are associated with the memory of the crystal.
With Kepler come in the Arsenal Nvidia, many interesting technologies have appeared. The most noticeable is GPU Boost, automatically dispersing the stone, if there is a reserve on TDP. Of the others, it is worth noting the support of 3D Vision Surround on one video card, new anti -aliasing methods, adaptive vertical synchronization and the presence of a discrete coding chip video Nvenc. You can read more about all this in the last issue of Gamery No. 5/2012 (see. "Responsive blow").
Zombies are attacking
The launch of the GeForce GTX 690 is one of the most memorable in our practice. Officially announced on April 29, as part of the GeForce Lan/Nvidia Game Festival 2012 festival, which was held in Shanghai. However, the press for this event began to be prepared in advance. About a week in about a week, a courier with a parcel from Nvidia came to our office. In the corporate bag there was … a nail with an engraved inscription: “For us in case of zombies or …” (“Use in the event of a zombie or …”) and the company logo. Shrugging our shoulders, we put down the tool to the side and began to wait. The situation cleared up three days later, when NVIDIA representatives called us and invited us to pick up another parcel. There we were handed a wooden box with a lid clogged with nails and the inscription "Caution! Weapons Grade Gaming Power "(" Attention! Game power as a weapon "). Inside, as you probably guessed, lay GeForce GTX 690.
